PROBLEM

In order to make the process of project management less complicated in the construction sector, how can we improve the way that blue-collar workers interact with one another through a simple chat interface with all the functionality of a project management tool.

In addition, they had enlisted the help of a branding agency to create a new logo and brand look, both of which needed to be implemented across the platform.

As part of my involvement on this project, I worked closely to instruct the client's design team on how to use Design Team on Design Systems and manage their day-to-day operations.

EVALUATING THE EXISTING USER JOURNEY WITH A UX AUDIT

We needed to learn about the present platform before we could start making changes to improve the user experience. In the first two weeks of the project, we analyzed the current web and mobile platforms to see what worked well and what might be improved in terms of user flows. We also performed a thorough check of the user interface's components to look for any discrepancies.

After two weeks, we presented our results to our stakeholders and provided a list of changes we thought were crucial to make as we began to rewrite the app from the ground up. Some of the recommendations made by the audit are outlined below.

The best products are born from a deep empathy with the people who use them.

PERFORMED A/B TESTING

We relied significantly on A/B testing results to decide which revised user experience to implement for each and every feature. Several vital processes, including Chat, Project, Registration, and Onboarding, have been thoroughly tested.

We used User Brain to find construction industry testers who were willing to record themselves navigating a prototype we had developed in order to verify the functionality of its many components.

We had them think aloud during the process so we could hear what was intuitive and what was unclear. We also had them complete an evaluation form at the end of the experiment, in which they indicated which pathway they found most satisfying and why. After collecting this information, we iterated based on tester input and, in many situations, decided to run further user tests to make sure the final processes were efficient.

PROBLEM VALIDATION THROUGH USER INTERVIEWS

We then utilized a framework called Simulated Shopping to perform a series of user interviews with the goals of validating the problems and establishing the Jobs To Be Done that users needed to accomplish after completing the UX Audit.

Our mission was to verify or refute the client's presumptions that construction teams had difficulty keeping track of their workload, sharing progress, and keeping track of relevant documents. We talked to construction employees from a wide range of backgrounds and positions to learn about their daily struggles, previous solutions, and openness to trying something new. Five people were interviewed in 60-minute sessions for our study.

VALIDATION

We confirmed through this procedure that construction workers were depending heavily on their cell phones for communication. The tools and information required to maintain track of job sites can be overwhelming, and we validated that employees in project management jobs whose major focus is on managing job sites often feel this way.

All of the employees agreed that they had a hard time keeping up with their hourly influx of emails, texts, and phone calls. We also found that employees working directly on-site primarily used images of the task sent via text message to their job site owners, along with a brief summary of the work done.

OUTCOME

In late 2022, a redesigned mobile and desktop version of Tasktag was released. The team was able to zero in on where the product may use enhancement thanks to the UX Audit process and A/B testing. With the new brand standards, we were able to simplify and optimize processes within the product experience to better fit with patterns consumers were already familiar with, in addition to building a design system.

The redesign of the construction management mobile app was a success, with users reporting that the app was now much easier to navigate and use. The new navigation system, improved speed, and enhanced project management tools all contributed to this improvement. Additionally, the redesigned document storage feature was well received, with users finding it more user-friendly and accessible..
